You can use the grey scale below to set up your monitor. Chip 1 should be white, but not overly blown-out white. Use the contrast control until it just appears crisp white to your eye. Then adjust the brightness control until chip 11 appears as black as the background it sits on. If chip 1 darkens during this process, use the contrast control to make it white again. You should be able to see 11 steps of grey across the scale.
